To the Pond
Today we were introduced to the meaning of the To the Woods Stemersion and what personal goals we should set for Stemersion. We visited the pond, watched the Canoeing Stemersion practice, and took pictures for our blog as well as meditated/relaxed for about 3 minutes trying to clear our minds and listen to the nature around us (and Mr. Bottelier yelling).
Meaning
To the Woods was inspired by the following quote:
“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I come to die, discover that I have not lived.”
–Henry David Thoreau.
We discussed the meaning to live deliberately and I felt that it means to live with purpose and a goal in mind; with everything you do continuously taking steps toward this goal. You must be self-aware to discover this goal and purpose. My goal for this Stemersion is to become familiar with myself. The overall quote, to me, means to be humbled by nature, go back to your origins, and gain knowledge from every experience.
My Experience
While meditating, I was able to feel the sun beating down on my back, interrupted by an occasional breeze. I heard the paddles slipping in and out of the water and the rustle of the grass as well as my own breathing. I felt the tickle of the grass under my legs and became completely aware of my surroundings. I was able to reflect on what I wanted to achieve during the coming two weeks and the steps I would take to accomplish that.
We finished the day with yoga that focused on acceptance. It helped me to realize that you must determine where you are at and accept that in order to continue making steps toward personal goals.
